Detailed description of Hawktree Golf Club

Hawktree Golf Club is a Public, 18 hole golf course located 5 miles North of Bismarck, North Dakota and provides great golf as well as native prairie, woody habitat, wetlands and a breathtaking scenery.

Hawktree Golf Club first opened for play in 1999. The course was designed by Jim Engh.

Featuring an open, links-style design with a mere 80 acres of irrigated turf grass, Hawktree Golf Course is an eco friendly course framed by hills planted in native grasses.

Hawktree epitomizes what a golf course should be - naturally challenging. You against nature - the rugged prairie lands lying hard by the Missouri River, enhanced with dramatic black coal sand bunkers, prairie grasses, three unspoiled lakes, and other eco-friendly design elements.

From your elevated perch on the very first tee, you know this game of golf will be something special. The array of colors is unexpected - startling. Emerald green fairways, bordered by the rusty reds of native grasses, and punctuated with black sand bunkers, the coloration creates a scene of incomparable beauty.

Four sets of tees allow you to personalize your game; make your round as challenging or as relaxed as you wish. This 18 hole, Par 72 championship golf course offers 18 distinctive, unique holes, featuring natural elevation changes that are both unexpected and exciting. Black sand bunkers (a unique solution to the lack of white sand in North Dakota, plus it doesn't blow away in the frequent wind storms) and the devilish design by architect Jim Ingh present a layout that will have you feeling you've played 18 one-hole golf courses. No club will go unused on this picture perfect course sculpted from land nearby the Missouri River. There's so much spectacular scenery, folks often don't even notice Burnt Creek as it meanders through the course.

The most difficult and challenging hole, without a doubt, is #18, a long par that finishes with a 150 yard uphill flourish. If the wind is against you that day, you will have your hands full!

An 80 foot elevation change from tee to green presents challenges on Hole #3. You can reach the green two ways – on the cart path or by skillful rope climbing. Most folks choose the cart path, and rightly so.

Walking the course is permissible, however due to the elevation changes most players choose to utilize a golf cart.

THEY HAVE TERRIBLE SIGNING AND TEE MARKERS ON THE COURSE.MANY HOLES WE COULD NOT TELL WHICH SET OF TEES WE WERE USING DUE TO POOR MARKINGS.ALSO NEED MUCH BETTER SIGNS TO DIRECT GOLF CARTS TO NEXT HOLE AND TEE BOXES. COURSE WAS IN NICE CONDITION.

Certainly in my personal top 5 courses I've played. Very tough but playable layout, with fast, true greens. The course is visually stunning, cut through the prairie, with unique black sand bunkers. Good mix of links style holes with more tradional American golf holes. The course is walkable if you are looking for a good workout, but you want to be sure you know what you are getting into, as there is a lot of elevation change to deal with. Overall, my only issue is the cost. At $70 walking ($90 with cart), this is by far the most expensive course inside 100 miles. It's worth the price for me once a season when I'm back in North Dakota, but it was a true gem at the $50 it was a couple of years ago.
